Valentines Day Cookies

When I came across Fancy Flours a few months back, I completely fell in love. They have the most extraordinary edible and non-edible embellishments for cupcakes, cookies and cakes I have ever seen. You can even find special ingredients, delightful packaging and displays such as cake stands with cake stand wrappers, ribbon and trim that coordinate with your party and even table decor. However, what caught my eye was something I had never seen before... are you ready for this? Edible images on wafer paper to apply on cookies! I was Giddy! The designs were vibrant, clear and detailed...need I say more? I immediately ordered Valentine prints to use on cookies I was going to give to my kids teachers on Valentines Day. I could not wait to try them, although I was a bit nervous it would be difficult to work with. Boy was I wrong! You just cut, paste and apply and VOILA! It will look like you spent hours decorating a very intricate cookie for someone special. Go ahead and try it and tell me what you think.

First, start with an undecorated sugar cookie

Roll out white fondant and cut with a cookie cutter in the same shape you used for your cookie.  Using a clean paint brush, apply fondant to cookie with a bit of water.  Then gently press the fondant and smooth it out with your fingers.

Take your wafer paper (it's thin and delicate so be careful) and trace lightly with a toothpick around a cookie cutter in the shape you desire then cut with your sharpest scissors.

Using another clean brush, apply light corn syrup to the back of your wafer paper.  Again, very gently then press the wafer paper onto the fondant.

Once the wafer paper is applied, turn cookie over and let rest for 30 minutes.  This helps adhere the paper to the cookie.

You can outline the cookie or the wafer with royal icing to give it a frame or any other edible medium you can think of.  Just be careful not to touch the wafer paper too much.  It's still very delicate on the cookie.

Happy Valentines Day!

Love,
Buttercream
