St. Patricks Day "Greenies"

When my brother was home over the Holidays we played the game Catch Phrase.  It's when you have a word or phrase and have to tell your team what it is by describing it.   My brother had the word Brownies and his bright idea to describe the word was to shout, "Greenies".   He used his hands as he spoke as if he were trying to drag the word out of us.  "Greeeenies, they're not "greenies" but they are...?" He said, with a telepathic glare.   We lost that round and had no idea he was trying to get us to say Brownies.  My family and I couldn't stop laughing at him because he could have said something more obvious like "what's the opposite of boy scouts?"  Instead he made up his own word and one we would never forget.  We instantly joked that I would have to create a St.Patrick's Day dessert for my blog and call it "Greenies" in honor of my brother and this fabulous memory we had over the Holidays.   So here it is folks!  The Greenie, technically you can call it a Blonde Brownie dyed green.  It's a yummy treat that is perfect for St. Patrick's Day.

Start with a Blonde brownie recipe

Dye it green with about 7 drops green food coloring

Add chocolate chips
(a brownie just isn't a brownie without chocolate)

Spread on a cookie sheet and bake.

Once the "Greenies" are cooled, use a shamrock cookie cutter and press gently to cut.
The texture is almost like a dense cake.  Or, a cakey cookie.
Not much like a brownie to me but I guess in the same family.  A distant cousin maybe.

Lucky for me, it came out great.
But it is still missing something so I decided to play with a chocolate drizzle.

Just melt chocolate chips in the microwave for a 20-30 seconds, stir and spoon into a Ziploc sandwich bag. Snip one end and get to decorating that cakey cookie...Ahem, I mean brownie.

Made some with polka dots

A Shamrock (of course)

Stripes...lots O' stripes.

Luck O' the Irish..they came out great and yummy!

Thanks for the inspiration Dean.

I took a bite just for you.

Happy Baking,

Buttercream

Greenies

Ingredients

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups packed brown sugar
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened
3 large eggs
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups (12-ounce package)  Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
7-10 drops green food coloring

Directions

PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Grease 15 x 10-inch jelly-roll pan.
COMBINE flour, baking powder and salt in small bowl. Beat sugar and butter in large mixer bowl until creamy. Beat in eggs and vanilla extract; gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels. Spread into prepared pan.
BAKE for 20 to 25 minutes or until top is golden brown. Cool in pan on wire rack.   Use Shamrock cookie cutter to gently press into the brownie cooled in pan.  Carefully remove brownie by pressing your fingers around the edges of the shamrock then press in the middle.  Drizzle with melted chocolate if desired.
