Peanut Butter and Bacon Dog Cookies

A Man's best friend has a lot to live up to.  He has to be loyal, loving, affectionate and always there by your side.  That being said, your dog deserves to be spoiled with gifts and treats this Holiday Season to thank him for a job well done.  My family dog, Ollie is spoiled rotten.   He has more sweaters than I do, tons of toys, blankets and a lots of bling on his shiny leash.  But as I was deciding what to buy for his Christmas stocking (yes, he has one too) it dawned on me that I had never tried to bake something for him.  I decided to go on a  Google search for easy recipes with wholesome ingredients that I already had on hand.  To my surprise I was flooded with choices as I found one recipe after another that seemed simple to prepare and tasty too. I chose a Peanut Butter and Bacon recipe because I know how much Ollie loves bacon.  The results were amazing. The kids even helped roll out the very pliable dough and my dog Ollie gobbled them up right away.  Why not try your hand at baking up a batch of wholesome goodness for your furry friend this Christmas.

First, combine all wet ingredients

In a separate bowl, combine all dry ingredients. I used bacon flavored treats but you can use bacon bits, or real bacon too.

Grab a cookie cutter...of course, the doggy bone is my first choice for dog cookies.  You can purchase one HERE if you don't have one.

I think the speckles of red bacon bits makes it look a festive Christmas cookie.  So sweet for my baby dog.

Ollie absolutely loved his treats.  He gobbled them up so fast that he was cut off after three.  He easily would have finished the entire batch in one meal.  Love this dog!

Peanut Butter & Bacon Dog Cookies

Ingredients
1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cup ground oats
1/2 cup natural peanut butter
2 tablespoon honey
1 egg beaten and at room temperature
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup chopped bacon, bacon bits or bacon flavored dog treats.

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350°. In a medium bowl combine all wet ingredients until well blended. Mix dry ingredients and add to the wet mixture  until well combined.  This will form a ball of dough. Add more flour or water as needed for a play dough like consistency.
2. Roll out dough on a lightly floured work surface.
3. Cut out with dog bone cookie cutter.
4. Place treats on a parchment lined baking sheet (they can be close together, just not touching)
and bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
5. Cool on a wire rack completely.
6. Store in a sealed container for a few weeks or you can freeze them for later use.

Yields about 15 cookies.
