Host a cookie exchange

Do you like to have a huge display of colorful and traditional Christmas cookies for guests on Christmas day, but don't have the time to bake a zillion varieties during the hustle and bustle of the season? How about hosting a cookie exchange.  It's a low key, high pay off way of stocking your freezer chock full of goodies that you didn't have to slave away in the kitchen baking yourself.  Plus, you get to gather with your friends (no kids or husbands), have some dessert wine, nibble on treats and chat it up.  It's a win win.

Here is the basic rundown:

Ask each guest to bring 1 dozen homemade cookies multiplied by the total number of guests, wax paper for separating layers and seal-able plastic containers to take their sweet treats home in.  In your invite provide guidelines to each baker so that you get a good cookie assortment: rolled cookies, bar cookies, drop cookies, decorated cookies.  Have your guests type up multiple copies of their cookie recipe to bring with them so you can assemble a quick recipe booklet for each guest to take home.   Your guests will be delighted and you'll be sending them home with goodies and recipes...what a treat!

Nibble on something other than cookies:

You may want to save your cookies for swapping only and set out an array of savory appetizers instead.  Set up a coffee bar, hot chocolate station (spiked of course) and offer a holiday drink such as homemade eggnog or spiced rum cider.
