How to make a book cake

This is a Harry Potter book cake I just completed for a client.  It was the first time I had ever done a book cake.  I didn't take pics of the process ( I was super busy) but it's really easy, I promise!

First, bake a sheet cake. I used a 9 x 13 pan.  Cut the cake in half, fill, stack and trim to desired size and shape.  Crumb coat with buttercream and refridgerate to set.

Meanwhile, color your fondant and roll out to 1/8 inch thickness. Grab your cake once set and cover entirely in fondant and smooth.  Take a utility knife and cut out the sections for the paper.  Smooth down overlap.  Take a ball tool and make an  indentation on the left side for book for binder.

Measure and cut white fondant for pages and take pallette knife to score lightly to resemble the pages.

Decorate the book cover as you wish.  Something great to do would be to order an edible book cover image from icing images.   You can upload any picture/image you want directly to their website.  When your order is complete they will mail it to you.

Attach it to the cake with a little buttercream ( instructions are on the website) and VIOLA!!  You have a realistic image that's super delicious and very impressive.   I didn't have time on this particular cake but next time, I'm so doing it.

Last step is always to steam your cake with a garmant steamer to make it shiny and clean looking.  If you ever watch Cake Boss you have probably seen BuddyValastro use this technique.  I asked for one for christmas and have been using it on all my cakes since.

Happy Baking!
